Goal Setting

​Setting both short and long term goals can be an effective way to create your desired future. After documenting your goal and its specific tasks, share it with someone and ask for their support. Don't forget to track and celebrate your successes along the way.
Successful goals: 
  • are written down and posted
  • specifically state the end result
  • have a realistic time frame
  • include a detailed action plan 
  • contain scheduled dates to evaluate your progress

Time Management

​Effective time management is a skill that can be learned. It involves planning, prioritizing, and self-discipline.

Scheduling tasks in your calendar with due dates and start dates allows you to create a realistic schedule that includes time for both work and relaxation which can help you achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Celebrate completion of every task or chunk  as motivation to move on to the next task.
Useful tools to manage your time:
  • Calendar or planner
    • Write everything down and check it at least once/day
    • Semester calendar with all due dates

Organization

​Schedule time at the beginning of each semester or new project to decide the most efficient way to organize your work, supplies, files, etc. Determine a routine that works best for you and follow it the majority of the time. ​
Some things to consider:
  • Declutter your desk and digital files at the end of each week at a specific time
  • Close or minimize all browser tabs that you aren’t using for a project to reduce distractions
    • Use research management software
    • Use an app to keep your tabs hidden 
  • Create folders and put all files into the proper folder when finished using them
  • Create a general plan for the week on Sunday evening/Monday morning
    • Prioritize what’s urgent and important 
    • Block time for each task
    • Block time for relaxing/rejuvenating 
  • Schedule prep time each night, so your morning runs smoothly
    • Plan lunch and clothes  
    • Prepare your backpack/briefcase 
  • Managing emails
    • Schedule a time to read and reply
    • Check only once or twice/day
    • Put emails to keep into the appropriate folder when finished responding to them
    • Reduce by unsubscribing

Academic Learning Strategists focus on the process of learning rather than on specific subject content.  They assist students to recognize their strengths, their learning style as well as their learning needs. This process is guided by the individual student’s current needs.
